Back to Back Problems

| January 18, 2012 | 0 Comments

This season the Jets have 13 back to back games. So far they have played 7 and have a fantabulos 0-7 record. If this team wants to be taken seriously they need to be able to win a couple of these short turnaround games.

So what’s the problem? Are they tired? Is it conditioning? Do they not have enough time to prepare? Is it mental?

I think its a little from column A and little from column B. It would be nice if there was an easy answer to this problem but sadly there is no magic wand to wave that will make the Jets play better in back to back games. If there was I could sell one to each NHL team for a 10 million bucks a piece, buy the Coyotes and move them to Regina.

Mental note: Start inventing magic wand for NHL teams.

Back to back games suck. There is no way around it. Playing in the NHL is tough and its wears down the body. These guys go hard for a night and then have to come back and play another physical game less than 24 hours later.

Well so do I and so do you. You have to get up everyday and go to work and then the next day you have to do it all over again. And yes you aren’t getting smashed into the boards but some people reading this blog have physically demanding jobs yet they find a way to perform everyday without getting paid millions of dollars to do so.

I work in film where it is not out of the ordinary to have a 15 or 18 hour day only have to come back and do that for the next month with little time off. These NHL players who should be in top physical shape are asked to play back to back games on the average on once every week and a half. I’m sorry but they should be able to handle it.

Perhaps the problem lies with coaching. Maybe they need to have harder practices on non game days. Maybe they need to simulate the conditions of back to back games.  Make the players work as hard the day after a game in practice as they would during a game.

Something needs to be done because the Jets performance in back to back contests is just plain sad. They look lost and unengaged. I’m sorry but there is no excuse for that. You are being paid to work hard every night and sometimes you have to work through the pain. There are days when I’m sore and not feeling it but you know what? I keep going because I am a professional.

I love the Jets with all my heart and will support this team until they put me in a grave but I still can get frustrated with them. I watched the game last night and saw no heart, no effort. The Winnipeg Sun would like to say its lack of talent but I don’t believe that. This team has talent but sometimes especially in back to back games they get lazy. Maybe they think they get a free pass since they played the previous night? I don’t know what the problem is but at some point the Coaching Staff and management need to do something.

If a player is not playing up to expectations then we need to move him. If he is unwilling to put in the work then trade him for someone who is. After December I have high expectations for this team. I expect them to play hard each and every night. If they miss the playoffs fine but I want it to be because we got knocked out by better teams not because we decided not to put the work in.
