Grading the Winnipeg Jets

| November 22, 2011 | 2 Comments

We are a quarter ways through the season and I think its time to call the Jets and their parents to come to the school for a progress report. All of these “grades” are based on my own personal views and really should be considered the gospel.

GOALTENDERS

Ondrej Pavelec  A  •  Pavelec has been the Jets best player so far. He has single handedly led them to a few victories. Sure he’s stunk up the joint a couple times and had to be pulled but a lot of that can be laid upon the D.

Chris Mason Incomplete • We really haven’t seen much of Mason to give him a fair evaluation. He looked decent in the games he played and then he suffered an injury and was placed on IR.

DEFENSE

Dustin Byfuglien C- • Buff is either one of the best players on the ice of one of the worst. He rushes the puck too much and has way too many turnovers. If it hadn’t been for his recent turnaround he would have received an F.

Zach Bogosian B • Bogo started off rough but has really stepped up his game and has turned into a solid D man. Sure his offensive numbers aren’t where they should be but we need him to be a defenseman first.

Johnny Oduya F • Oduya has been the worst Jet D man so far this season. In the opening game he set the tone by causing two goals and really hasn’t improved much. This was a guy I had such high hopes for yet he coninues to disappoint.

Tobias Enstrom C • Enstrom was just starting to get this game going when he got hurt. His +/- was a little skewed due to the fact he was playing with Buff yet he too was prone to bad turnovers. Once he gets back he should be able to improve his grade.

Ron Hainsey Incomplete • We haven’t seen enough of the veteran D to really have a fair assesment of his play. I liked what I saw so far though.

Mark Stuart B+ • Stuart has been a nice surprise so far this season. He has been the shut down D that this team so desperately needs. When enstrom got hurt he took his place as Buff’s partner and has filled in admirably. He knows that if he’s playing with Buff he’s got to hang back.

Mark Flood A- • With the D corps decimated by injury flood was called up from the Ice Caps and has impressed early on. He’s scored a few goals and is proving that he should stay in the show.

Randy Jones Incomplete • Jones got hurt early on and hasn’t been seen much.

FORWARDS

Nik Antropov B • I wasn’t expecting much from the big guy but he really carried this team in the early going. He was big, and physical down low which has really led to the Jets recent success. His numbers have dropped a bit but thats probably due to other teams having to account for him now.

Alex Burmistrov B- • The young russian looked like a world beater early on then other teams started to notice him. He’s still one of the more dangerous jets out there.

Bryan Little D- • To say Little’s plays has been a disappointment would be a gross understatement. yes he got a couple goals last game but his production has been off and he is supposed to be the Jets top face off man yet has failed to live up to the billing.

Kyle Wellwood A • The Jets got Wellwood as a free agent this summer and it looks like they got the steal of the century. Wellwood looks like he is finally living up to his potential.

Jim Slater B Slater has also been a pleasant surprise so far. He has really upped his offensive game and added a physical presence that the Jets sorely need.

Tanner Glass B • Glass another free agent signing who has really looked good with the Jets. He is a good character guy who gives the Jets a lot of experience and grit.

Evander Kane B- • Kane would be higher if it wasn’t for his slow start. Now that he’s firing on all cylinders expect the young forward’s grades to improve.

Andrew Ladd C- • Ladd needs to step up his game. He really hasn’t had the spark  this season that has defined his career so far. Ladd has looked slow and just ins’t getting the bounces. His grade would be lower if it weren’t for his leadership in the dressing room.

Eric Fehr Incomplete • He’s only played one game so far but big things are expected from the Manitoba native.

Tim Stapleton B • Color me impressed. Stapleton has looked really good so far this year. he his a tenacious forechecker who does all the little things a team needs.

Chris Thorburn D- • Other than the occasional fight what does this guy bring to the table? Nothing. He can never seem to hold onto the puck and is guilty of more than one bad turnover. I can think of a bunch of guys in St. Johns who I would rather have than Thorburn.

Blake Wheeler F • If there were a grade lower than and F I would give it to Wheeler who has not lived up anywhere near his potential. This was supposed to be a big year for Wheeler yet he has yet to produce and scored his 1st goal just the other day.  Wheeler has all the tools he needs to start using them.

COACH

Claude Noel C- • Its been a rough start for the Jet’s coach. The team didn’t seem to respond to him early on and it looked like his coaching tenure could be a short one. To Noel’s credit he came down hard on the guys and have seemed to get the attitudes turned around.

OVERALL

Winnipeg Jets C+ • This is a team on the rise. If certain players can live up to their potential this is a team that could compete for a playoff birth.

Pretty much bang on, only have a few differences. Think Coach Noel deserves a better mark, He has stuck with a defensive strategy that no one else employs and has made it work, Giving up only two goals in most games has been good, offense has been sluggish a few times that could have turned a L to a W. I like to see innovation, it is rare in sports these days. Burmistrov deserves a better mark if only for his persistance along the boards, his scoring punch has been a nice surprise. Lastly Slater deserves an A, I see him everywhere, to the point I had to look up his career stats to see why I had never noticed him before. I would say the clear Prarie air agrees with him as has given him a rebirth. Go Jets

Pretty much bang on. I might give Wellwood an A+ for the price/production ratio he’s given us. Johnny O needs to go and wheels has been anything but. Lets see how they do on this road swing and then maybe we can start a discussion on trading Wheeler. I think the Jets overall rating is will go up significantly soon.
