Winnipeg Jets 5-8-3 13pts

Columbus Blue Jackets 2-12-1 5pts

6pm Nationwide Arena

Me oh my oh, lets go to Columbus Ohio. The Jets get a much needed game against the worst team in the NHL as they face the Blue Jackets tonight. This is probably the first real must win situation this team has faced so far this young season. The Jets have dropped 4 straight and have looked pretty bad doing it. A game against Columbus might be just what this team needs to build confidence. They need to get get back to basics. This is a bad Blue Jackets team but they can’t take them lihtly. Just play their game and the Jets should walk out of Ohio with 2 pts.

3 KEYS

STAY OUT OF THE BOX

The Jets lead the league in one dubious stat; Penalty Minutes. This has been the Jets main issue so far this season. They take a dumb penalty and the other team makes them pay. Sure there have been bad calls but the Jets need to not put themselves into situation where the ref has to make a call. Keep sticks and elbows down, its that simple.  Anytime the Jets get any momentum they take a bad penalty and then the other team makes them pay. They rank 26th in the league on the kill and thats just like spotting the team a few goals with the amount of penalties this team takes.

PLAY A FULL 60 MINUTES

The Jets seem to start out strong then taper off late in the first, early second period only to come on strong in the third while the game is tied or are behind. Winnipeg has to find a way to play for a full 60 minutes, something they have only been able to do one or two times so far this season. When this team can figure out how to play for a full 60 they will win a lot more games. I think the issue is depth. The Jets do best when they shorten the bench and get their stars on the ice more often. The problem is that playing at that pace wears them down and you are forced to play the 3rd and 4th line in important situations. The Jets just don’t have the depth right now and they need to rectify that situation.

GET THE PUCK OUT

Last night my mens league team the Molson Twins (best team name ever) got drubbed 6-0. As I was watching the game on the bench I noticed we were playing a lot like the Jets. We had one glaring issue last night. Its the same issue the Jets have had all season. We couldn’t get the puck out of our own end.

The Jets seem content just to lazily throw the puck up the ice only to have it intercepted and kept in by the opposing D. They need to start using the glass and have the wingers use their speed to pick up the neutral zone. This will force the other team to play back and not crowd the line in fear of giving up an odd man rush. A good breakout will open up the game and create opportunities something the Jets sorely have lacked this season.

Go Jets Go.
