Winnipeg Jets 8-9-3 19pts
Washington Capitals 11-7-1- 23pts
6pm Verizon Center
Tonight we will know if the Jets are for real or just a pretender as they face the Capitals on the road. Winnipeg just has to keep doing what it has been doing if it wants to keep THE STREAK alive. Pavelec needs to be strong again as the Caps have gained some confidence since the last time these two teams met. I think Washington will come out with all guns a blazing as they feed off of their home crowd who will try and will their team to a win. The Jets need to just go back into their playbook and see what they did the last time these teams met because it worked so well last time.
The rosetta stone for the Jets recent success has been the forecheck and forcing the other teams D to make plays. This all starts with getting pucks in deep. It may not be the prettiest way to play hockey but its been very effective. Its pretty basic, dump the puck in and force their D to make a pass. The other players are clogging the lanes and taking away the high percentage plays therefore forcing them into long passes which is a recipe for turnovers.
TAKE SOME PRESSURE OF PAVELEC
Even though Pavelec has been playing like a world beater you can’t expect him to be on all the time. The D needs to do a better job of limiting the shots that the Jets goaltender is seeing especially against an offensive powerhouse like the Capitals. The Jets are not always going to have Pavelec back there, at some point he is going to need a rest so the good guys can’t always expect him to carry the team. Yes he is your best player right now but lets make things just a little easier on him. Blocking shots and poke checks are a good place to start but they must also try and limit the time the other team plays in the Jets zone. To do this they will have to take away the neutral zone and not allow the caps to set up.
GET THE BIG GUNS GOING
The Jets are getting pretty lucky when most of their scoring is coming from guys who weren’t expected to carry the load. Having the like of Wellwood and Slater scoring is a nice surprise but what the Jets really ned is for their big guns to start putting the puck in the net. Kane has finally got his act together now we need Wheeler and Ladd to start playing up to the potential they have shown in the past. Even Antropov and Burmistrov who were on fire ealier in the season have since cooled down. If the guys who are suppose to be scoring threats all get going his is a team that could do some damage in this league. The problem is there is no consistency. Guys are wither hot or cold and just can seem to keep the scoring up.
