Winnipeg 2-5-1 5pts
Philadelphia 5-3-1 11pts
6pm Comcast Arena
The Jets begin an epic road trip tonight as they face the Flyers. The Jets are looking for their first road win of the season and will be up against a Flyers team who will be without Chris Pronger. Winnipeg gets forward Jim Slater back and the easy money says Ondrej Pavelec gets the start. Against the Rangers the Jets looked good yet were unable to seal the deal. Scoring is still an issue as is special teams play. The Jets are going to need every trick in their book as they will be up against a well rounded Flyers Squad.
It would be easy to panic after the last game. The Jets dominated the Rangers yet still lost due to a fluke puck off of a skate. Things like that happen. The bad thing is that they seem to be happening to the Jets all the time now. Hockey is a funny game. Its a game of streaks. When things are good they are really good but when the wheels come off watch out. The Jets need to forget about their record, forget about the media and just get back to playing hockey. Sure it sounds easier than it is but this road trip could be what the doctor ordered. They will have less attention and will be able to focus on doing the little things.
CRASH THE NET
The Jets are doing a good job at getting shots on net but have been pretty bad at getting the rebounds. The Jets are near the bottom of the league when it comes to second chance shots. Once that puck is fired the other two forwards need to converge on the net. Thats how you produce goals when you don’t have a prolific goal scorer. They are what we like to call in the biz “manufactured goals” or second chance goals or rebounds. Its hard to beat an NHL caliber goalie on the first shot. These guys are too good for that and will stop 95% of the first shots they face. If they give up a rebound you have to capitalize on it and put the biscuit in the basket.
SET THE TONE
There are a few ways to set the tone in a hockey game. A big hit, a fight, score a goal. All these things can set the way the game will proceed. The Jets need to establish the tone by a different means tonight. They need to not screw up. Sounds easy but for this team its been pretty hard. The Jets have found new and inventive ways to self destruct each game. Against the leafs they tipped one into their own net and gave up 2 goals in 30 seconds. Against the Coyotes a bad giveaway in the first minute doomed the team. Last game against the Rangers the Jets D man Zach Bogosian put the game winner into his own net with his skate. Add in bad penalties and horrid turnovers and the Jets do more to themselves to lose than the other team. Tonight the Jets need to play a strong mental game and not make it too easy for the Flyers.
