On the road again, just can’t wait to get on the road again. The Jets head out to play the Leafs in a game where we will see if the win over the Penguins was an anomaly or the real deal. The Jets will take on a Leaf’s team that has had a somewhat surprising start having not lost a game in regulation so far this year. Phil Kessel looks like the Star the Toronto media want him to be and James Reimer is playing lights out in goal. As for Winnipeg they come off their first win of the season having played their most complete game of the year. If the Jets can adopt the same game plan of a strong forecheck while minimizing mistakes they could come into the ACC and steal one. The leafs should be returning to their underachiever ways shortly and the Jets would like nothing better than to start them on the path to the golf course tonight.
WILL THE REAL PAVELEC PLEASE STAND UP
Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavelec was lights out the other night. He made a few Key saves as he lead the Jets to victory. He’s going to need a similar performance tonight has he will face a high flying Leafs squad. He did not look like the same goalie who played in games against Montreal and Chicago. Pavelec is a streaky goalie as most are. When he’s in the right frame of mind he is easily in the top ten goalies in the NHL. On the flip side if you can get int his head early he folds faster than Superman on Laundry day. The Jets need the stand on his head and look amazing Pavelec to shine if they want a chance of leaving with any points.
CONTAIN PHIL KESSEL
Did I just write that one of the keys is to contain Phil Kessel? Wow that felt strange. The truth is Kessel has been the best Leaf so far. He has 6 goals this season and looks electric. The trick with Kessel is that you want to hit him early. The Jets need to use their size to slow down the chubby faced forward. D men will be told to make sure they finish their checks anytime Kessel comes into the zone. While he is talented with the puck one of the knocks on Kessel is that he tends to shy away from heavy contact. I think that Bogosian and Big Buff will be all over the Leaf’s leading scorer right off the first face off. Once you shut down Kessle the Leafs lack the offensive depth to do any real damage. When Kessel dominates the Leafs will win. The Jets need to dominate Kessel.
POWER PLAY (again)
Will tonight be the night the Jets finally notch a power play goal? Now to be fair the unit looked pretty good against the Pens. They hit a couple posts and were playing against a pretty hot goalie. Still the Jets need to get the power play going if they want to have any success this year. At this point they are on their own heads when it comes to being on the man advantage, Everyone is talking about how they need to produce so now they are over thinking things. They just need to get back to basics, follow the system, take shots and the goals will come.
