Winnipeg Jets 3-5-1 7pts

Tampa Bay Lightning 4-4-2 10pts

6pm St. Pete Times Forum

Game two of this most epic road trip and the Jets hope that this game isn’t even half as epic as the one that started it all. Claude Noel has an interesting Job to do. He needs to walk a thin line of praising the team for 9 goals and coming back from adversity while at the same time giving up 8 goals and two 4 goal leads are unacceptable. It will be interesting to see how this team comes out. Will they have some confidence when it comes to their offense? Or will have they lost all confidence in their D and goaltending?

3 KEYS

SHUT DOWN THEIR BIG GUNS

Tampa has a lot of weapons and the last thing the Jets want to do is to get into a shoot out with them tonight. Tampa plays a run and gun style that could be dangerous to Winnipeg’s beleaguered D corps. As hard as it is for this team the Jets need to play a very conservative game on D. If they give up odd man rushes chances are Tampa’s prolific offense will make the Jets pay. As has been the theme for this entire season the Jets need to just simplify what they are doing on the backend. No pucks up the middle and try and eliminate turnovers. Maybe with the offensive explosion of the last game the D will no longer feel the need to try and press? One can only hope.

DECREASE TIME SPENT IN THE BOX

This team takes a lot of penalties and have a tendency to give up power play goals. This needs to stop. Other teams are seeing this and are trying to act their way to the power play. In Philly, Flyers were diving all over the place knowing that if they get the Jets in the box they have a good chance to put the puck into the net. The Jets have to eliminate the stupid calls. Don’t make it easy for the other team. Perfect example is Andrew Ladd’s call the other night. Already down a man Ladd has a chance to go on a breakaway. He’s got a Flyer beside him. Instead of beating him with speed, Ladd reaches up and pulls the guy down getting a much deserved interference call. there was no need to do that. He should have just used speed or just dump the puck down deep since they were on the kill.

KEEP GETTING TRAFFIC IN FRONT

When the Jets have had success scoring this season its been when they have gotten traffic infront of the opposing goalie. The Jets have size upfront and need to start using it more. Yeah its not as sexy as a one timer or a two on one but it works. This team doesn’t have a lot of offensive tools so they need to use the ones they have. Deflection have been big for this team and that trend needs to continue. They have D men with big powerful shots (when they hit the net but thats for another time). Let Bogosian and Buff fire those howitzers. Have a guy infront for the tip in or at least to get the rebound. Traffic infront is the key to win in this league.
