Toronto Maple Leafs 18-14-5 41pts

Winnipeg Jets 18-14-5 41pts

6pm MTS Centre

I couldn’t think of a better new years eve opponent than the Leafs. I remember as a kid growing up in the Peg and going to new years eve games with my Dad . Usually it was an early game and then afterwards the whole family would meet up at Marigolds on McPhillips for dinner. This year the game is a little later so it can be the featured game on Hockey Night in Canada. I’m sure Don Cherry will be pretty pumped as should be the fans as the Jets and the Leafs battle for a playoff position. The Leafs as usual started off strong but have faltered as of late. The Jets on the other hand have been nothing short of spectacular on this massive home stand. They built a foundation for a playoff run and now is the time to switch gears and bring it home.

Chris Mason got the shutout the other night against the Kings and now Coach Noel is expected to hand it back over to Pav. With two fantastic goalies there should be no letdown at the last line of defense. Pav is going to need to be sharp as he faces one of the NHL’s top snipers in Phil Kessel. While I expect the goaltending to be stellar the jets need to make sure they don’t force the goalies to carry the team. The D needs to step up and minimize the chances the other team gets. As weird as it sounds I think this team is better defensively without Big Buff in the lineup. Yeah he’s a dynamic player but he also makes a lot of mistakes in his own end and carries the puck way too much. With him out the Jets don’t need to worry about him jumping into the play and can just focus on the task at hand. Don’t get me wrong I want the big guy back as soon as possible, I’d just prefer if he played a different position.

Chasing down teams and scratching your way into the playoffs is one thing. Staying there is something totally different. The Jets have been on the outside looking in all season and now have finally cracked the top 8. They are no longer the bottom feeding team that many made them out to be early in the year. Now they are the hunted. Teams will be taking the Jets more seriously now and it is imperative for them to respond accordingly. No more taking teams lightly because no one will be taking Winnipeg lightly anymore. Teams will be less likely to rest their top goalies or players. They are coming for our boys now and they need to be ready.

This will be the last game at MTS Centre this year and the eyes of the nation will be on Winnipeg once again as Hockey Night In Canada comes to town with the Leafs in tow. The crowd has had a few months to refine their game since the home opener. Lets show the people and media in TO that Winnipeg has the best and loudest fans in the league. Every time a leaf touches the puck I want to hear deafening boos. I want all of the writers in Toronto whining on twitter about how the Winnipeg fans boo the other team. These fans are a big reason why the Jets are in the playoff hunt. The Leafs aren’t used to playing infront of crowds that care or even know hockey. Toronto has some of the worst fans in the NHL. Lets show them what the best sound like.
