Update: A recent news release indicates that the new Winnipeg Jets jerseys will be unveiled on September 6, 2011 at 11:00AM local time.
In the history of sports, there may have never been a more anticipated uniform unveiling than that of the 2011 Winnipeg Jets jersey.
Just this week, the RCMP announced the seizure of approximately $12,000 worth of counterfeit Winnipeg Jets Jerseys headed to Manitoba from China.
It has been said that the authentic jerseys would not be seen by the public until the Winnipeg Jets actually wear them for the first time at the Young Stars pre-season tournament.
That tune changed today when Jets’ spokesperson, Scott Brown, said the following with respect to the seizure of the counterfeit jerseys.
“We do want to be active in preventing this sort of thing, and trying to fight the counterfeit goods out there,” he said, adding the public’s curiosity about the team’s on-ice uniforms will end in the “very near” future.
“Maybe next week,” he said of the jersey’s unveiling, adding the Jets will make a splash with it. “I’m not going to get into the details of how we’re going to unveil it, but the jersey unveiling will be an event.”
This comment by Brown was followed up tonight by Dennis Beyak on Dan Tencer’s 630 CHED radio show. Tencer tweeted this shortly after.
When the new Winnipeg Jets jersey design is unveiled, there will still be a waiting period before they will be available to the public. According to Reebok, the team will (of course) get the jerseys first, followed by local Winnipeg retailers, then online retailers and out of market stores.
One of the more reputable online retailers, Cool Hockey.com, is taking pre-orders for the jerseys. They offer official NHL tackle twill customization and ensure delivery as soon as they have the authentic jerseys in stock.
