The Knappies – My Winnipeg Jets Awards Preview

| December 5, 2011 | 0 Comments

At the end of the season I am going to hand out my prestigious awards THE KNAPPIES out to deserving (and undeserving) Jets players. I thought it would be interesting to see who is contending right now and compare it to the winners at the end of the year.

MOST IMPROVED

Zach Bogosian – The talented young D man signed a new contract and looks to have rembered how to play D again.

Nik Antropov – The big guy has started to play up to the level that many thought he could.

Mark Stuart - Stuart has been the jets most consistant defenseman so far this season.

And the winner is…

Zach Bogosian – Bogo has really turned his game around. I think when he was in ATL the coaches wanted him to be involved offensivly. While in Winnipeg Charlie Huddy has taken some of the pressure off of the kid and made him focus on the defensive portion of the game. Yeah he still makes some bad choices but its always when he’s trying to press and make an offenisve play. When this kid sticks to D he’s a force on the ice.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

Johhny Oduya – He quickly earned the name Johnny NoNo for his horrible turnovers.

Blake Wheeler – Big things were expected from the big guy yet he still hasn’t found the touch.

Dustin Byfuglien – Big buff is an enigma, wrapped in a riddle, wrapped in a 265 lbs frame.

And the winner is…

Blake Wheeler – The former bruin was supposed to add an offenive punch to this team but other than a few flashes its been or of a slp. Wheeler just hasn’t been ablt to get it going this season. There is no doubt that he is working hard but he’s here to score goals and needs to get it going.

NICEST SURPRISE

Mark Flood – With a depeleted D corps flood was called up and has impressed in every game.

Kyle Wellwood – Signed as a free agent for $700k Wellwood is near the top of scoring for the team and has been solid so far.

Alex Burmistrov – He’s a work in progress and has fallen back a bit but has already surpassed last years totals.

And The winner is…

Mark Flood – Sure Wellwood is an easy choice but Flood is the right one. This is a guy who has been a carrer AHL’er and now has stepped in to be one of the top D men for the jets. He plays solid in his own zone and rearley turns the puck over. The guy can also score as well and has a decent shot.

MVP

Evander Kane – He started off slow only to get on fire and lead all the Jets in Scoring.

Ondrej Pavelec – He’s been able to keep the Jets alive even when the D seemed to abandon him.

Kyle Wellwood – Wellwood is scoring on 21% of his shots. Amazing.

And the winner is…

Ondrej Pavelec - Truthfully it could either be Kane or Pavelec at this point but the tie has to go to the goalie. Pavelec has been amazing at times and has single handily guided the Jets to victory on mor than one occasion. The thing I really like about Pavelec is that he seems to have the right atttitude. If he gives up a bad goal he just shrugs it off and goes on with the game. Pavelec is an elite goalie that could guide this team to the plaoffs. If that happens he will be a lock for this award.
