Time for a Heart to Heart

“We need to have a little talk.”

I have always hated those words be it from a wife, girlfriend, parent, police officer. Those words always meant I was in for some very unpleasant news. Those words are the universal code for “you are not going to like what I have to say”.

So it is with a heavy heart that I say to you fellow Jets fans we need to have a little talk.

Now don’t worry I’m not breaking up with you or letting you know the family dog has been taken to the “farm”. We just need to have a little heart to heart about the Jets chances for making the playoffs.

Its not looking good.

The Jets sit 4pts behind both the Caps and the Sabres with the Canes only one point behind the Jets. A week ago the Jets controlled their destiny and now they are at the mercy of other teams. To put it bluntly the window is closing.

Last week the jets beat the Caps and looked like they were ready to end the playoff discussion once and for all. They were just 2pts behind and in complete control. The Caps then played the Blackhawks and got beat handily which opened up the door for the Jets to gain some ground as they were playing the Canes that night at  the Phone Booth.

The Jets blew a third period lead and gave up the win with just over a minute remaining in the game. The Jets played sloppy and got burned for it. With that loss the Jets also suffered a major blow to their playoff hopes. They gave up control.

You don’t want other teams to control your destiny yet with that loss the Jets gave up some say in their playoff dreams. The Caps won their next game and the Sabres and Canes both started to surge. Now for the Jets to make the post season they are going to need some help.

Tonight the Caps play the Flyers and the Jets desperately NEED Philly to win this one in regulation. If the Caps win they will have a six point lead on the Jets. If they lose then the Jets would be able to tie the Caps with a win over the Preds this weekend since the Jets hold a game in hand.

But now we also have to worry about the Sabres and to a lesser extent the Canes. We have one game left against Carolina which will be huge but in reality its the Sabres I worry about. We do not play them again so we need to have other teams help us out. That’s not the position you want to be in.

Don’t get me wrong I still think they Jets have a chance. I’m just not thrilled that we must now relay on other teams to get their. There is no room for error as the Jets in all reality can only afford to lose maybe 2 more games to close out the season. Doable? Yes? Realistic? Probably not.

With a majority of games away from home and the Jets struggles on the road this team would need to do what it hasn’t been able to accomplish as season. They would need to win most of their games on the road.

I think they could do it but it really doesn’t look good. At this point the Jets just need to win. If they can win 7 of their next 9 then they should have a decent shot. Anything less than that and get ready to hear “They are just the Thrashers” for at least another season.

Go Jets Go!
