Winnipeg Jets Fantasy Hockey Preview

Dustin Byfuglien Winnipeg JetsIf you are like me, then you’re a fantasy hockey junkie and like me you like to pepper your squad with players from your favorite team. Today we’ll take a look at the best options for Winnipeg Jets fans.

I am going to assume you are in a standard league where you need to draft players based on position.

The one knock against the Jets is that they all have pretty bad plus-minus numbers. This definitely hurts them as fantasy picks in leagues that track that particular statistic. Hopefully, under Coach Noel’s new system, these numbers will improve making more Jets attractive Fantasy picks.

TOP TIER

There are not a lot of Jets I would consider selecting in the first few rounds. They lack the big numbers that warrant an early pick.

Defense - Dustin Byfuglien

Big buff is your best bet if you want a Jet on your team. Last season he was second in scoring for all defenceman with 20 goals and 33 assists. He was -2 and also racked up 93 penalty minutes. He is productive on the power play with 24 points last season. The guy is a fantasy hockey dream and will probably be taken early on. So, if you want Buff I suggest you try and get him within the first three rounds.

SECOND TIER

Here are a few good mid round picks.

Goal – Ondrej Pavelec

Pavelec is a great mid round pick up. There isn’t a lot of goaltender depth, so getting a young up and coming goalie who gets a lot of starts is a plus. For my leagues, we have to have 2 goalies and Pavelec is a great option to have on your bench. Last season he had a GAA of 2.73 and a Save Percentage of .901 both are very respectable.

Defense – Tobias Enstrom

You could make the argument that Enstrom is a top tier pick. And, if it was for his plus minus, I’d agree. Enstrom led the Thrashers with power play points and put up very solid numbers with 10 goals and 41 assists.

Left Wing- Andrew Ladd

Ladd put up decent numbers with 29 goals and 30 assists but his -10 is a little troubling. He gets decent power play time and was able to tally 18 points. I think Ladd is a solid mid round pick.

THIRD TIER

These will be the late round picks. Hopefully you can find a few sleepers here.

Left Wing – Evander Kane

Kane had a breakout year last season and hopes to continue his upswing.  He had 19 goals and 24 assists and 68 penalty minutes. Kane is a good late round pick and could be the steal of the draft if his numbers continue to rise.

Right Wing – Brain Little

Little had a great year last season with 18 goals, 30 assists and an impressive +11 (on this team =11 is impressive). Little hopes to build on last season and would be a great late round choice or even a waiver pick up after the season starts.

Center – Mark Scheifele

I would only grab Scheifele off waivers. You need to see if sticks with the team  after the first nine games. If he does, and you have an open roster spot, then I think you might want to take a flyer on the talented rookie. He’s got tremendous hockey sense and a nose for the net. If he can get a decent amount of ice time he might be worth taking a chance on.
