Winnipeg 0-1-0 o 0 pts
Chicago 1-1-0 2 pts
7:30pm United Center, Chicago
The Jets have had a few days to digest a very ugly loss to open up the season. All aspects of the game were suspect and the good guys need to pick up their game or tonight’s match up in Chicago could get out of hand real fast.
The Blackhawks come in as a lot of people’s Cup favorite. This team is loaded offensively and still can play D with the best of them. There will also be a lot of emotion in the air as Captain, Andrew Ladd, and Big Buff return to Chicago since being traded to the Thrashers after the Hawks Stanley Cup win.
BETTER DEFENSIVE PLAY
On Sunday the Jets D didn’t have the best game. They pinched at the wrong times and had some very bad turn overs. Oduya was really bad with his mistakes – directly causing 2 goals. I have a feeling Coach Noel had a few choice words for him. Big Buff needs to focus on playing D first and not worry about trying to play forward. Chicago plays a very fast system that relies on turnovers and transition play.
To be successful, the Jets need to play a little conservative. They will need to let the play develop and try and keep the Hawks’ forwards in front of them at all times. The plan will be to try and not give up the big play.
GET THE POWER PLAY GOING
Maybe the only thing worse than the Defensive play last game was the power play. The Jets went 0 for 7 with the man advantage – which is unacceptable. Coach Noel couldn’t seem to find the right combo and my sources tell me that he spent a lot of time in practice this week trying to find a productive PP unit. The main issue was they weren’t getting enough pucks on net. They moved the puck nicely, yet held onto it way too long. It doesn’t have to be pretty it, getting goals is what is important. And, when the Jets did finally shoot, it was either blocked on it missed the net. Anyone can make a goalie look good when he isn’t seeing any shots. The Jets need to get traffic in front of the Hawk’s goalie tonight. Winnipeg has a lot of size up front and should be using that as an advantage especially on the Power Play.
PAVELEC NEEDS TO SHINE
Even before the season started it was clear that if this team were to have any success that goaltending would need to be outstanding. While he played decent on Sunday, Jets Goalie Ondrej Pavelec didn’t stand on his head and thats what this team needs. The Jets are going to be offensively challenged all season so they can’t afford to give up any weak goals. For the games the Jets win Pavelec will probably be one of the three stars. Now to be fair he didn’t have a lot of help on Sunday from his defense but thats when he needs to step it up and dominate the game like he is capable of doing.
